A global concern with the ecological future of the world threatened by global environmental disasters that are taking on alarming proportions has focused closely on what the Bruntland Commission had termed Sustainable Development: Development concerned with our future generations. Ethnographic research has indicated that women have played pivotal roles in protecting and nurturing key resources, as they engage in providing critical subsistence resources for their families. Women’s role in sustaining the environment has been specially highlighted in the Global South, in such places as India and Indonesia. Men’s and women’s joint efforts and how women support the efforts of men are also within the scope of this panel. In this panel we focus on and invite papers dealing with the notion of sustainability and how gendered praxis orients itself towards renewal and conservation of critical resources that are fast slipping away from our world.
